Working in Encinitas has always felt like a gift. The ocean air, incredible community, and the joy of showing up each day to care for and teach young children is truly so special. But like so many educators in San Diego county, it has been a challenge to find affordable housing, especially in the place that we serve.
When I began working at Kids By the Sea, I was commuting from Bankers Hill in downtown San Diego, and on a typical day, my drive would take an hour each way. I maintained that commute for four years, until I took some time off of work after having my first child. When I was finally ready to return to Kids By the Sea as the new director at the Encinitas location, my husband and I made the decision to move closer to the school, an adjustment that nearly doubled our rent, without any increase in square footage. We were so incredibly thankful for the ADU that we moved into, it was tiny but perfect for our small family. We knew at that time that we simply couldn't stay in Encinitas long term and hope to save in anyway, but for the time being we would do it.
At that time, Amanda shared with me her vision of creating affordable housing for teachers. She understood the struggles that myself and my coworkers were having with either long commutes or living locally with exponential rent costs. She wanted to help us by creating a place for us teachers to live amongst the community we served, but at a price we could afford. One of the biggest reasons I've appreciated working with Amanda over the past 10 years is her genuine care for the people around her. Whether it's friends, family, preschool families, or her teachers, she is a true champion for others and always ready to support and uplift everyone in her community.
My family moved into the house at Plato place just two months ago, and it has been nothing short of magical. It is a place of wonder for my children, a secret little haven full of life. They watch the bees buzzing in and out of the neighbors beehive each morning as the sun rises, they search for lizards in the shrubs and plants, and listen to all the various neighborhood birds as they fly around the property each day. This home is truly something of dreams, a place with a meaningful and rich history within the community, and a space for children to learn and grow amongst nature and wonder.
Amanda and Jeremy's vision is one where us teachers can live in the community we serve, build connections, and be supported in ways that truly matter. I am sharing this story not just to express my gratitude, but to spotlight what is possible when people in leadership decide to value people over profit and invest in their team and their community.
DELANEY
Living and working in Encinitas has been such an unexpected gift. For years, I commuted long hours from Fallbrook during community college and later from near San Diego State while in college. Honestly, always thinking that actually living in the community I worked in would be out of reach. As a 22-year-old just starting out in my career and living on my own, affordable housing in a place like Encinitas felt nearly impossible.
That’s why moving into the Plato Place home has been so life changing. It's not just a place to live. It’s a peaceful, inspiring space that has made a huge impact on my day-to-day life. Amanda and Jeremy’s vision to support educators by creating housing we can actually afford is something rare and truly meaningful. I feel so lucky to be a part of it. Having access to affordable rent here has changed everything for me. Being able to live where I work has allowed me to build stronger connections with the children and families I serve, and to feel genuinely rooted in this amazing community. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and hopeful for what this kind of support could mean for other young teachers like me.
